Doitsu Koi are a striking variety of koi known for their smooth, scaleless bodies or rows of large, mirror-like scales. The name "Doitsu" means "German" in Japanese, referencing the German mirror carp introduced to Japan in the early 1900s. Japanese breeders crossbred these carp with traditional Nishikigoi to create the Doitsu varieties admired today.
Unlike fully scaled koi, Doitsu Koi typically feature:
- No scales, giving them a sleek, leather-like appearance, or
- A single row of large scales along the dorsal and lateral lines, adding dramatic visual contrast.
Their smooth skin enhances the clarity of their colors and patterns, making them especially eye-catching in ponds and water gardens.
Doitsu Koi are prized for their vivid coloration, clean patterning, and the way their scaleless skin highlights their beauty. They are a favorite among collectors and hobbyists seeking koi with a modern, refined look.
Our Peanuts are unculled, meaning we have not gone through and cherry-picked out the best ones to keep for ourselves. So you're sure to find many "diamonds in the rough" in every box of Peanut Koi from Blackwater Creek! This includes Standard Fin & Butterfly Fin (no guarantee on ratio, could have a lot or no butterfly in the mix). There are 100-125 fish per box. Quantity will vary based on the size of the fish. If the fish are running on the smaller side in a given week, you'll receive more fish in the box. If the fish are running on the larger side, you'll receive fewer fish in the box.
Due to the fragile nature of these small koi losses up to 20% a few days after arrival have been experienced. Adding 5 lbs non-iodized salt to each 100 gallons of water will reduce post shipping losses. Water above 70 degrees will have best results.
But What Do They Eat?
Wondering what to feed your Peanut Koi? At just 1- 2 1/2", they are too small to eat pellet food, so we formulated a finely-ground version of our Gold-N Professional Koi Diet in a size small enough for the Peanuts to eat.
